Q1) Why high-power LED (HPLED)? What's with the common 5mm and high-brightness LED (HBLED)?
Good question. 5mm and HBLED would really simplify matters as thermal consideration is almost negligible in both cases. Yes, the Shiok module will look sleeker and cheaper. But we will all get less kick of out the lighting experience and to us, it is not a step forward for the industry. The HPLED segment is where the action is and where the purists will be.
Q2) Is the Shiok LED module IP68 rated?
Honestly, we find it hard to justify such extreme testing but be rest assured the product is professionally pieced together by a meticulous pair of hands backed by 5 years of Plexiglass aquarium experiences.
Q3) How will the heat dissipated affect the chiller’s load?
Driven at 350mA, each Shiok produces 1 watt of energy. A 3ft long aquarium will require 10 watts typically. We strongly believe the benefits of improved LED optical efficiency and the sleek seamless aesthetics prevail over the only drawback of an insignificant extra load on the chiller. It is quite a no-brainer honestly.
Q4) How many Shioks can be connected in series?
This is limited by the output voltage of the LED Driver. The typical forward voltage of the Shiok LED module is 3.3V. A 24V 350mA LED Driver can support up to 7x Shioks.
Q5) Is the LED driver integrated within the Shiok?
No. We encourage the use of remote LED Driver for reason of simplicity and we do not have the resources and appetite for gerber files.
Q6) Can I drive the Shioks harder, say 700mA, to achieve more lumens?
You should be able to drive harder (>500mA) for out-of-water suspended LED luminaries in general. Due to limited thermal conductive properties of the thermoplastic heatsink, the results of our thermal modeling do not encourage anything above 350mA.
Q7) What is the consequence of driving at 700mA or out-of-water application?
Shiok is strictly designed for active liquid cooling environment. Driving at 700mA in water will shorten the LED life-span to just 2K running hours.
Q8) What is the thermal conductivity of the thermoplastic heatsink?
20 W/m K. Aluminum = 250 W/m K
Q9) Do you offer Shiok in other optical beam profile?
The standard Shiok has a miniature 26 deg full angle reflector. We do have other optics but they are way bigger and taller.
Q10) How much is a Shiok LED module?
We wanted to encourage the experimentation and adoption of Shiok or its comparable equivalents. For a kind donation of USD 15 dollars, we will ship a Shiok LED module to your door.
Q11) Nuts! You mean this lighting venture of yours is for a non-profitable cause? You must be crazily bored or something.
The standard Shiok has a miniature 26 deg full angle reflector. We do have other optics but they are way bigger and taller.
Q12) So you guys see yourselves as social entrepreneurs?
We believe even a minnow is entitled to attempt making a difference to the world.
